KZ7 - Seven Winds of the Seven Seas (2016)

Genre: Instrumental, Heavy Acoustic, Metal
Artist: KZ7
Album: Seven Winds of the Seven Seas (08 June 2016)
Country: Pará, Brazil

KZ7 is a musical project Drii Gomes and Willy Augusto, two Brazilian guys aiming to bring something new from the most diverse influences, since of Instrumental Acoustic to melodic metal. The design of the KZ7 name ideas and album The Seven Winds of the Seven Seas has the same time, the outskirts of 2014, when Drii and Willy, after several work together, decide to unite to work on own works.

"The idea was to merge what we had in common and different, to do something different with our style." (driigomes)

KZ7, with their first album-project, The Seven Winds of Seven Seas, brings a fictional story that unfolds around the fifteenth century, when as a result of wars between France and England, an accomplished sailor must abandon their city, that which was on the verge of Seashore, which had brought inexplicable moments and frequent setting of the sun, not to perish in a strike led by French troops. So he goes there with some acquaintances in search of a new place, in search of the unknown.

Sharing ideas that both guarded, born several songs, and a riff on pedal-point, comes another song: "Guardian of Horizons" (listen to the demo version here).

"To initiate the development of the story I thought Nothing better to do it in style, orchestrating and putting one on top guitars, to break everything. That's how I thought of the opening song, the "Quest for Unkown" (Willy A.)

In addition to instruments, which were the focus, the project also brought opportunities for the vocals, present in Despair songs and tears under the sunset, in hard-rock and acoustic styles, respectively.

"Perhaps one of the most interesting things about the project was that, while I'm more accustomed to a heavier sound, and he in something more erudite and robust at the time of writing, we were the Heavy Metal orchestras, acoustic quarter-notes to sestinas, not to mention that I learned a lot with him... " (driigomes)

The demos have been published occasionally in the Youtube channel, check them here.

The story behind the album

(Read complete post here.)
Since this is a conceptual album, the X tracks written by himself KZ7 tell the fictional story of a captain through of seas hitherto unexplored by man.

"Fleeing away from chaos, hatred, war. In one day, the beautiful and gentle city of Blueshore no longer be the same. Nobody could imagine that this beautiful setting of the sun almost every afternoon shone on the bay waters disappeared to give way to darkness reflected in the blood spilled on water. Nobody could imagine that this place, so far away from any other corner where reign impurity and malice, could be invaded by atrocious men, armed with the most deadly weapon in a war - hatred. Nobody could imagine that the beautiful countryside of the city, modestly dubbed "Elysian" burn in flames and the ashes only would keep the memories of the great moments that were lived there. No one could imagine that one day had to abandon Blueshore, hastily departed, leaving everything behind, hovering in silence and sorrow. And then came the utopia reality!"

[Album Review]: Alexandra Zerner - 9 Stories (2014)

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Alexandra Zerner is a solo artist, guitar player, multi-instrumentalist, composer, session musician and sound engineer. And in November of year de 2014, she started her solo career as a guitarist, working on her debut solo album “9 Stories”,

The latest release is entitled  "9 Stories", features nine themed/conceptual pieces that enable Alexandra Zerner to display pretty impressive compositional, production and performance capabilities. Alexandra Zerner is a multi-instrumentalist and the tunes benefit from the full use of Alexandra tonal pallet, including guitar piano and organ which adds significantly to quality of the album. In the solo work, you can hear Alexandra's influences, a nod to Petrucci a wink to Friedman ("Memoirs Of A Geisha" and "The Sorrows Of Young Werther") and Yngwie/Becker overtones ("Girl With A Pearl Earring") . The guitar tone is full on and metallic, plenty of over driven grunt, but not too bright in tone, which adds to over all sound balance for the album.
Alexandra Zerner

Alexandra has created exquisite classical acoustic pieces, subtle classical piano driven pieces like Light Breathing and then more hard hitting progressive rock/metal tracks in your work. The whole album is well recorded and produced, with intelligent compositions which are well balanced and well thought through. I am pleased to say there is a significant amount of high quality guitar playing through out which will tick the box of any guitar fan and the conceptual nature of the album should put it on the shopping list of fans progressive music.

[Album Review]: Randy Ellefson - Now Weaponized! (2013)

Randy Ellefson is a guitar virtuoso whose work consists of instrumental albums; his fifth such release is out now, entitled 'Now Weaponized!'. In 2013 release of this work, marks his fifth album on which he plays every instrument (lead and rhythm guitar, bass and drums) - all without a vocalist in sight.
Interestingly, not only does Ellefson play all guitars and the bass but the drums as well. Regarding the tracks, they all have pace, melody, and are superbly performed. A Very multi-layered sonic overload of melody and energy.

However, as with a lot of instrumental albums, it is hard to any track to truly stand out; in this case it is probably the sum of the parts which is its strength. This album also has very much a soundtrack vibe to it.

[Album Review]: Angra - Secret Garden (2015)

A year later after the DVD release Angels Cry: 20th Anniversary Tour and with the departure of the emblematic Edu Falaschi, the Brazilian band Angra had to reinvent itself and start a long tour to satisfy the wishes of the fans, with in this year 2015(except Japan) his latest work: Secret Garden!

The History behind the Album
"Can something that does not exist for the eyes, or that is not perceived by the senses, be considered void?". This is the great theme created by the band to give birth to her latest work: Secret Garden. The songs they sing the story of the character Morten Vrolik, that after the death of his beloved, need to put everything we believe as evidence, to thereby continue living. Philosophy, religion, self-knowledge, moral values are some of the topics covered by the excellent album's lyrics. Vrolik then atheist, need to find some meaning in life and question everything that had been giving him support. Will change your mind or follow their old dogmas?

First of all it is necessary to mention that this is the most direct album, more prog and darker the band's career. But is not that boring prog (forgive me fans of the style), but with a good prog taken, without leaving aside the heavy metal band characteristic. The songs are short (the longest are the "Newborn me" and "Upper Levels", with more than 6 minutes) and have, in most cases, less than five minutes. There has always Angra: strong, vigorous and inspired. And there is, of course, the choirs, the changes of nuances, but all of a faster and more accurately.

In the previous album, "Aqua"(2010), the songs of former vocalist Edu Falaschi had distinguished themselves. In this new album, in turn, the highlight is in charge of vocals and amazing melodies, that make it a way to elevate the band to another level. From a musical point of view, they used the style of speed metal or melodic metal start of his career and also progressive features found on Edu was to create technical and dramatic elements for the new album. Kiko Loureiro The guitar solos are overwhelming.

the vocals of Fabio and Rafael made the difference in this work.
The presence of an Italian and talented singer as Fabio Lione is fully effective and makes this album a high level of work too. Fabio, which is famous for its excellent vocal expression, joins the Angra at the same time it is also the lead singer of Rhapsody of Fire and printing passes in that Angra is really counting on your support.

This is definitely one more Masterpiece is added to the history of this epic band!!!!

[Abum Review]: Toomas Vanem - I (2014)

Toomas Vanem is an estonian guitarist with a proven experience in musical industry. On his first solo album, aptly named I, he plays in a fast and subtle way akin to the guitar heroes of the eighties, be they in rock/metal music like Jason Becker, or in jazz likeMike Stern. Backed by two creative musicians, bassist Henno Kelp and drummer Andrus Lillepea, he uses his dexterity to create dynamic instrumental songs within the realms of jazz-rock and metal. Although his discography is already quite impressive, "I" is his debut effort as a solo artist.

Naturally Vanem's guitar expertise is highlighted in this album, which covers ground from prog metal to jazz fusion. Drummer Andrus Lillepea and bassist Henno Kelp supply the rhythm section in a manner that Vanem's complex compositions need whether he's playing metal or jazz rock.

The album presents a few marching instrumental anthems. The album starts off with "Tomorrow's Child" which will please any Dream Theater fan with its John Petrucci like guitar riffs. "Lonely Proton" is next and is an entirely different beast. This piece is a full on fusion song showcasing Vanem's expertise as both a metal guitarist and a jazz rock extraordinaire. "Ghost Story" is the third track and is reminiscent of Joe Satriani. "Operation S.S.E.S." is next and once again with its heavy guitar riffs recalls Dream Theater or even Yngwie Malmsteen for its fretboard speed.

"Summer Samba" is a jazz rock track influenced by Spyro Gyra which features a nice Fender Rhodes keyboard solo by Sergey Pedersen.

"Orbital Man" is next and is a heavy fusion track featuring some nice nylon string acoustic guitar recalling Al DiMeola. "Attack of The Killer Honey Bees" is a solo piece in which Vanem plays all of the instruments, including guitars, keyboards and drum programming. It was written after he was stung by a bee in his yard. "Gravity of Eiffel Tower" is a nice fusion track reminding me of Allan Holdsworth. It features Stuart Hamm on bass guitar as a special guest. Vanem had previously performed together with Hamm in 2010 for a few concerts when he visited Estonia. "Flower Power" is another heavy tune yet melodic at the same time. It reminds me of Jeff Beck or Tony MacAlpine at times.

Closing the album is "Butterfly Effect" it goes back and forth between heavy guitar riffs and melodic jazz inspired soloing.

"I" comes highly recommended to fans of Dream Theater, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth and other prog metal and jazz rock artists with emphasis on heavy guitar. I is an album of pure guitar brilliance, that certainly deserves a place in the discography of any serious guitar lover. It’s played with a lot of passion and prowess, and, since its title suggests that a follow-up should be expected, every effort should be made to support its genitor.

[Album Review]: Ignazio Di Salvo - A Gift to the World (2014)

The void has been filled recently with the release of "A Gift To The World", debut album that has collected in a handful of instrumental pieces the first exploits of our compositional soloist. Composed and arranged entirely by Ignazio Di Salvo, guitarrist who has served on the collaboration of external interpreters for some tracks of bass, drums and keyboards.

Since the opening track is clear matrix that inspired the creation, not difficult to track down that path prog-rock, which to many other virtuosos of the instrument like to review and mix with any other type of musical influence manages to congenial. It must be said that in effect you are faced with a "virtuoso", Ignazio Di Salvo is well aware of its technical capabilities, which exploits with expertise and impeccable control, both in the songs more excited than in most emotionally connotations.

Perfect example of the ability of the young guitarist from Sicily is the song "A Night Of Change", a true gem of the lot, alternating with moments of pure equity melodic development in areas dedicated to show off purely technical.

The whole album sounds good, the sound is always clear and well balanced. The tracklist is difficult to extract the individual to hold on to them then humming when you come down the stairs, but the reality is that the intent of the album probably will not have these. Each track on the album is placed on a very good standard, the same construction harmonic-melodic compositions of the individual is worthy of praise, but it must be noted that "A Gift To The World" is undoubtedly a hard-oriented to a well-selected band of listeners.

This debut is, as expected, an album focused on guitar Di Salvo, a tool that is prince and governor of the entire swing. This certainly does not affect the success of a product that will surely be able to give a lot of satisfaction hearing to lovers of the genre, is not a disc from the first places on the Billboard charts, but dificilmente the architect had to have such ambitions at the time of writing.

"A Gift To The World" is an album of a guitarist for the guitarist, a disk capable of enhancing the most out-emotional communication instrument that is the protagonist, spacing between the walls of the best musical that takes an imprint foot from the wing of the historic guitar hero, only to be re-stirred and kneaded in new form and color.

A convincing debut to Ignazio Di Salvo, who sins only that naivete typical of each work before you want to summon such a clear call to follow future developments of a guitarist undoubtedly deserving of the attention of many, especially the fans of the instrument.

[Album Review]: Dimitar Nalbantov - Gora (2014)

Bulgarian guitarist Dimitar Nalbantov found solace in the recorded works of guitar greats such as Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. And to gladden the ears of Guitar Virtuosity lovers, in the middle of 2014, it released its newest album entitled "Gora"!

Listen to the nine songs on the album “Gora” (meaning: “forest”) and you’ll hear the sounds of the Bulgarian forest, you’ll be overwhelmed by its scents, and you’ll feel the sunshine caressing your skin through the green foliage.

Well, Dimitar has done a better job in preserving the feel of Bulgarian folklore. If you don’t know much about Bulgaria, you’ll probably find the music enchantingly exotic, for example. Moreover, Bulgarian folklore’s typical irregular beats/rhythms match perfectly the guitar-oriented rock which Nalbantov uses as a starting point, giving it a more progressive aspect. Stylistically, the album is further enriched both by the presence of heavier tracks (Perehilion) like in jazzier parts (Gora). Besides the fact that listening to his Gora, if I felt a "light" the influence of Steve Vai techniques and grooves Satriani.

Worth much only listen to this masterpiece!

[Album Review]: Alex Masi - Danger Zone (2013)

Alex Masi had a long road as a band guitarist and also soloist. Exist since '80s, in his belt is about 15 all instrumental guitar albums. Danger Zone is his latest as per 2013, just three years after his previous Theory of Everything. Alex also had gone a variety of genre in his music, started as heavy metal gone to classical music and others, his latest style seems to switched into more electronic music. As hear in Theory of Everything where a lot of tunes were laid on a machine generated beat, in Danger Zone, it utilized 90% of it. So, do not expected heavy metal riffs in the intro, as many has been replaced by synthesizer and beat machine.

In this hour of guitar playing, Danger Zone resembling what we familiar in Joe Satriani's Engine of Creation and also remind you to Steve Vai's weirdos, especially in album Ultrazone. The thing is, when listen to electronic music for 60 minutes it's completely pulled out heavy metal. It mean that Danger Zone will more favor to those who more into nu-metal and something like that. In the musical aspect, this album will stand out in this particular 'electronic shred' category. If you enjoy the part of modern music and guitar shred, this album is for you.

[Album Review]: Mr. Octopus - Domino Effect [EP] (2013)

The album, released in 2013, marks the debut of Mr.Octopus (originally of Portugal) a marked debut by a set of seven instrumental themes, seven themes of fierce, vibrant, amazing sound. Hugo Freitas - drums, Miguel Bento - down - and Ricardo Mealha - guitar, are the three tentacles of this sonically powerful creature. Powerful.

[Album Review]: Evan Brewer - Your Itinerary (2013)

Hello everyone! Today are the first post of this 2015th, and I bring you a Bass Album Review!
Like the solo album from Thomas Giles of Between the Buried and Me, “Your Itinerary” provides a very different musical outlet for The Faceless bassist Evan Brewer. Devastating technical death metal this most definitely is not, but don’t let that stop you from listening, because Brewer knows how to craft very solid music without hellish growls or blast beats. For fans of a proggier, jazzier sound, these eight tracks create an incredibly satisfying excursion to the fringes of metal and beyond. Evan Brewer took the metal world by storm with his 2011 album, Alone. Alone was an album that showcased Brewer's abilities as a bassist and a composer for the instrument all by itself. Now with his newest release, Your Itinerary, Brewer expands his horizons to an entire band's worth of sounds to very good results.

The elements on this album are varied and interesting. Varying from play styles such as jazz to blues and even some electronica. These styles are woven gently by the hands of masterminds proficient on their particular instruments. The additions are superb and bring dynamic feeling to each individual song on the album. Evan's bass work is excellent and more intrinsic to the flow of the album. His bass is essential as it brings complex melodies to the table. As a catalyst in this regard; leading his colleagues follow him upon this journey.

Tracklist:
1. The Adjacent Possible (3:53)
2. Microscopic Scale (3:29)
3. Another World (4:20)
4. This Seems Familiar (6:06)
5. A Little Goes a Long Way (2:31)
6. Cause For Concern (5:10)
7. Home Away From Home (3:20)
8. Full Circle (6:47)

Everything about this album just works. It's intelligently written jazz metal that doesn't try to be more than it is. While a potential listener has to be willing to enjoy styles beyond metal, not to mention music that completely lacks a vocal component, “Your Itinerary” is something any prog metal fan should check out!

[Album Review]: Hans Platz - Timestamps (2013)

"Timestamps" is what german guitarist Hans Platz offers with his debut under his own name. It is his first solo album, and was self-released in 2013.

It is eleven tracks dominated by strong guitar lines, no vocals, strong melodies and an excellent production. The sound is very exciting, like walk through an exciting jungle where there is a lot more to be seen than what first meets the eye.

Platz is a guitarist, all his compositions are instrumental, and the guitar does indeed dominate the proceedings through and through. There is room for both the different drummers and bassists contributing to shine, but never in a similar manner to Platz and his guitars. The album shows a lot of strength, mainly in their choruses, with a strong presence of Bass . You could say that the album starts out well but looses a bit towards the end, not that it ends poorly but it is noticeably less good in the end than in the start.
This German musician joins the ranks of guitar heroes with a rather impressive debut album. An album with a foundation in metal, but touching upon both jazz rock and funk frequently, and with plenty of variety and versatility in both support instrument and lead instrument performance and expression. As far as recommendations go, fans of instrumental guitar albums in general and metal-oriented ones in particular can note down that this is a production they will most likely enjoy.

Do you like Instrumental Rock Music? if the answer to that question is yes, add this album to your collection is a good choice.
